Important Tips for Videoconferencing

Research has discovered that people process information differently if they receive it via videoconference rather than face-to-face. Participants in videoconferences tend to be influenced more by heuristic cues—such as how likeable they perceive the speaker to be—than by the quality of the arguments presented by the speaker.5 This is due to the higher cognitive demands that videoconferencing places on participants. So if you are the presenter at a videoconference, you will want to emphasize nonverbal signals of likeability and warmth—leaning forward slightly, smiling, showing palms, and so on.
